It’s Mid-Autumn according to the Chinese lunar calendar…

Packaged Mooncake from Hubei Province. Can you believe that? The leaves haven’t even begun to turn, the weather is warm, people are still wearing shorts and t-shirts, and it is mid-autumn by one calendar.
Each year it changes. Last year the holiday fell on the 25th of September. Families will celebrate by enjoying time together, large dinners, and most of all; eating the mooncake.
Mooncake is a special treat made of a sweet thin dough stuffed with varying fillings then lightly fried and packaged. Similar to the candy isles in every supermarket across the US at Halloween, the supermarkets here have had large displays of Mooncake on display and sale for the past week leading up to today.
One of my former students had a special package of cakes [pictured left] from her home province of Hubei, in the north of China, mailed to herself that she shared with me today. As for large celebrations, another province will host a large celebration this evening that will air on local CCTV that families will settle around the television to watch in their homes.
